Why a disposable camera for a reunion

Reunions produce the photos people keep for decades, and they are almost always taken by three people and shared by one. Kept turns the whole room into photographers and puts the entire roll in everyone’s hands the next day, with no email chain.

The delayed reveal helps here in a way it does not elsewhere: people who have not seen each other in twenty years talk instead of photographing, because there is nothing to check.

Where to put the code

  • The name tag. Everyone wears one and everyone reads everyone else’s.
  • A card on each table and one at the registration desk.
  • The reunion group or email list a week before, so people know it is coming.

From running it

  • Encourage a free account after the reveal. Guests can then return to the roll from any device for years, not just from the phone they joined on.
  • Ask people to shoot the people, not the venue. Thirty photos of the hall are thirty photos of the hall.
  • Export the roll within the first few months. Nothing is deleted, but after 120 days retrieval from archive takes 12 to 48 hours.

What it costs

One payment for the event, by how many guests can join. Free for up to 5 guests. Capacity only goes up, so start with the number you expect and add on the night if more arrive.

Questions

How do people get the photos afterwards if they are not technical?
When the roll develops, everyone who joined sees it on the phone they joined with. One tap on Export saves the whole roll to that phone's camera roll. A free account lets them open the same roll from a computer or a new phone.
What happens if someone loses the phone they joined with?
Their place on the roll lives in a token on that phone. Without a free account they lose access to the roll. With one, they sign in on any device and it is there.
Do guests need to download an app to use Kept?
No. Guests scan the QR code, type a name, and the camera opens. On an iPhone it launches as an App Clip, a small temporary version of the app that needs no App Store download. On Android and everything else it runs in the browser.
Can the host see the photos before everyone else?
No. Before a roll develops the server does not send photo addresses to anyone, including the host and the person who took the picture. The host can choose to develop the roll early, which opens it for everyone at once.
How much does Kept cost?
Free for up to 5 guests. Larger films are a one-time price for the event, from $1.29 for 10 guests to $69.99 for unlimited guests. Nothing renews. An Unlimited Shots add-on for $6.99 removes the 36-frame cap for everyone on the roll.

Give everyone a camera. Take away the screen.

Free for your first 5 guests. Your first roll takes about a minute to set up, and nobody has to install anything.
